I am newer to GR Research and I appreciate the upgrade paths that are offered by Danny. I went for the Sourcepoint 8 upgrade with stock polycaps, reusing the inductor for the mid-woofer notch filter. I upgraded one speaker first so I could A-B the before and after impact. At first I thought the upgrade was mild, but admittedly I did not spend much time doing the comparison. I then upgraded the second speaker and did a few hours of listening to music and videos. The results are better than my initial impression – this revised crossover with higher quality components is a solid winner. The natural presentation of the Sourcepoint 8 sound was enhanced with more clarity and spaciousness in the soundstage. The soundstage depth and width improved (for the first time sounds we’re not only to the front and sides but also behind me) and the new clarity established by the crossover design pushed the sound field into territory these speakers did not have before yet were latent in the speaker matching from low to high band frequencies. In effect, the true potential of the speakers was unlocked and resulted in an improvement that is worth cost and time of this upgrade. Like any system upgrade, the related components have to be up to the task of revealing the sounds this speaker pair can produce. If you have the source/preamp/amp or integrated components that exceed the capability of the Sourcepoint 8’s and you want to squeeze the performance out of these speakers, I highly recommend this kit. This upgrade makes it easy to keep the Mofi Sourcepoint 8’s in use for a very long time.

I echo the review above. This was also my first experience with GR Research. I liked this speaker stock. I like it way more now! No, it doesn’t sound like a different speaker. All the characteristics I loved about the speaker are still there, but it feels like the speakers were under a moving blanket, and I had no idea until I updated the crossovers. That’s the best way I can describe it. The upgraded components took the blanket off and now these things SING. I got the sonicap and other inductor upgrade, so did not re-use any existing components. Consequently, I had to build a separate board for the woofer and tweeter section and mount them in different areas of the cabinet. It’s all in and mounted snug. No rattles and just pure bliss.
Big thanks to GR Research for all they do. I’ll be a repeat customer.

I have one MoFi 8, using it as my Center channel, my L/R are MoFi 888’s.
I decided to build a new crossover for my 8, including the Sonicap option. I decided to build the crossover using an external enclosure. Danny helped me with making sure I had the correct number of Tube Connectors (3 pair) and extra 10′ of solid core wire. I picked up a component box (10.4″ x 7.2″ x 3.7″), fabricated a board, and went to work laying it all out. Tip: I would not go any smaller on the box, the upgrade kit components need this much space.
The final result is very good! When I’m using my system in multi-channel, and especially concert video’s, where the singers voice is concentrated to the center, the MoFi 8 sounds amazing! Crystal clear, and very resolving. I listen to concert videos on the loud side, absolutely no fatigue in the voice department.
I look forward to someday upgrading my 888’s
