Wharfedale Evo 4.4
This is my first review, ever. I wanted to share because the positive experience I’ve had is real and I’m a hard to please person. Also because of Danny’s encouragement to post a review.
I bought the Wharfedale 4.4 speaker pair as a “b” stock for 1/2 price of retail. It turns out they were perfect, just had ugly boxes. So a good deal to start. I saw the GR Research upgrade video with Danny explaining what could be done with the speaker and why, before I bought the speakers. I was counting on good drivers and cabinets as the foundation. I love the idea of improving something beyond what is “standard” to a higher level. Just like upgrading performance in a vehicle-you need quality parts. Here is what I think:
The sound truly is wider, deeper and quieter. The highs are improved and clearer because of the cross-over tweak. I absolutely love it! There is especially a more notable difference the better quality source-FLAC sounds beautiful. I hear more instruments and orchestration in familiar music I’ve listened to since the upgrade. Do burn in for a while before forming any opinions when you first test the upgrade because the sound changes (improves) quite a bit over time. I’ve been using them constantly for two months now. I enjoy music so much more. Thank-you GR Research team for offering this upgrade. $650. is significant to pay but these are significant speakers! I’m a happy customer.

I provided the Wharfedale EVO 4.4 used in this upgrade. I think it is a wonderful thing to have a person/company willing to provide a very reasonably priced (in my opinion) upgrade package to improve loudspeaker performance beyond manufacture. After putting the upgrades in place, I proceeded to do my usual listening/testing of my setup (sans Audyssey or other room correction). The first noticeable improvement was clarity. More specifically, cowbells, cymbals, shakers etc. were very distinct and realistic. I also noticed a better integration of subwoofer to mains. While I am not sure the new crossovers impacted this particular function, I cannot deny what I am seeing (REW) and hearing. This particular journey was very much worth it for me as I can now just relax and continue reading about stereo/home theater without any temptation to keep chasing an elusive target. While I am absolutely certain I could get better sounding/performing equipment, I don’t feel the need to. A real treat: Coldplay: Adventure of a Lifetime (official video) the first 30 seconds provides an amazing sound stage!
