SVS ULTRA Tower Speaker Upgrade Kit (Pair)

(1 customer review)

$1,250.00

The price is per pair!  This speaker measured quite well, and instead of reinventing the wheel we opted to copy the original network with much higher quality crossover components.
Please see the video and measurements below for more info. The kit includes all new crossover parts, a set of tube connectors and new wiring.

Note: The old crossover board is NOT reused as the new parts will not fit onto the old board.
The new crossover will need to be mounted onto multiple separate boards. (not included)
This is not a kit for beginners, and contains a lot of components in a complex network.

When the kit arrived and I saw the parts; I knew they were all quality components, but all about three times the size of what SVS supplied on their crossover board; as well as cheap electrolytic caps and iron filled chokes on their board. I was excited to get started.

I unassembled my first SVS Ultra Tower speaker, started with the top (mids and tweeter), then bottom two woofers, took out the crossover board, which was challenging because they used two screws; and clip capturing corner holders.
I then started to disassemble the crossover board for the new parts only to learn there was no way to fit the components on the old board. I emailed GR Research only to learn you were not meant to use the existing board, you were supposed to do point to point wiring on plywood or mdf board. I might add that nothing was said in the documentation sent with the kit.
So, I cut two pieces of plywood the same size as the existing crossover board; and started to go to work with solder lugs and hot glue (not provided). Well; after two days of trying to lay out the board; first to fit thought the 8 inch woofer hole and then to be able to mount the two woofers after you managed to get the board into the cabinet. I finally got the two woofers in, and I had completed one speaker. I learned on this unit what not to do on the second speaker.
Hint: the larger caps I positioned on the board in a way that completed the circuit after the board was in the cabinet, I also did so with the 5.1H and 4.7H coils, this worked better using one board. After looking at the problem two boards would have been a better solution. Total of 5 days working average 4~6 a day!
Now for the review as to was it worth it! Yes. Yes, it was worth the time the curve balls and everything else I had to overcome to get this upgrade installed to improve the sound coming from these SVS towers.
The first thing I noticed was in the midrange, vocals seem to come alive and none of the distortion that came with the stock crossover, maybe distortion is the wrong word, it did not seem natural there seem to be an artifact especially in female voices, it is hard to describe, but I can say that it is gone and I am listening to my music the way it was recorded. Thank You money well spent.
