This upgrade is for a pair of speakers.
This kit Includes all of the components and wire needed to upgrade the crossovers for the Magnepan 20.7’s & includes 1 set of tube connectors to allow for an internally mounting the crossover.
This kit now includes a replacement backplate for mounting the tube connectors.
Disassembly for this speaker is a two-person process due to their size and how fragile the inner MDF frames are if they are not handled carefully.

I have had Magnepan speakers since the mid 80’s starting with the MGIII, then 3.7 and finally the 20.7’s which I have had for over 10 years. As we have discovered not many speakers can match the sound stage and imaging from the 20.7’s but in our hobby there is always room for improvements. Better source components and amplifiers are the primary targets but all of the improvements from those devices still have to deal with the very limited stock Magnepan crossovers. To that point even Magnepan has finally addressed this with the development of their X series. I have never heard any X series Magnepan, only read reviews and do believe they are pretty good. The problem for those of us who already own Magnepans is the upgrade cost and process which includes sending our speakers to Minnesota and praying they make it there safely.
This is where GR Research crossover upgrade comes in. I recently purchased Danny’s 20.7 kit and with the help of a Magnepan Doctor completed the crossover upgrade. As you can tell, I love the Magnepan sound and have experienced multiple component upgrades that elevates these speakers to another level and this now includes the GR Research crossover upgrade which I have dubbed the X squared. This upgrade makes the 20.7’s sound like a actual dynamic driver speaker BUT with all the magical benefits of the Magnepan diapol/panel sound we all appreciate. If you watch Danny’s video about this upgrade he mentions actual base punch which I thought was good enough before upgrading, news flash, its real! The imaging and sound stage presentation is also much better, my bet from the crossover improvement between the bass & mid panel.
If you are a Magnepan fan and have considered the X upgrade but cringed at the idea of sending your speakers to Minnesota I urge you to consider the GR Research crossover upgrade!Footnote: I wrote the review above a couple days after completing the crossover upgrade. A few weeks (and few hours of listening) later the upgrade continues to amaze. Pretty much every time I sit down for a listening session I reply a well known track and say WOW, never heard it like that before; this crossover upgrade unlocks what the 20.7 is really capable of and its amazing!
